One of my relatives died and a post-mortem was performed. A week after the funeral I went to handover papers to get the death certificate. Next to Colombo Coroner's office in Colombo (inside the General Hospital) there is a small office that handles applications for death certificate. I went there and handed over them the documents given to me by the Coroner and JMO. A lady in civil was there and I was asked to put my name and address in a log book, in order to send the death certificate by post. Thereafter, she asked me to pay her Rs.100. I did but no receipt was issued. At that moment I realized that she collects money like this from everyone who come to obtain death certificates.
